Martin Russell heaps praise on talented youngster as young trip enjoyed a successful Under-17 WC call…

MANAGER Russell Martin is hoping that Saints young trio Sam Amo-Ameyaw, Jayden Meghoma and Tyler Dibling enjoy a successful Under-17 World Cup.

The three have been named in Ryan Garry’s 21-man England squad for the upcoming Under-17 World Cup, which takes place between November 10 and December 2.

Southampton had the opportunity to prevent the trio from travelling to Indonesia due to their involvement with the first-team squad but decided it was best to allow them to play at the World Cup.

Asked by the Daily Echo about their call-ups, Martin said: “They train with us every day.

“I spoke to Jason (Wilcox) last week when we knew they were going to be called up, it will be massive for them to be a part of that.

“Some of those groups over the last few years have had good success at tournaments. It can be really big for those players’ development.

“It’s great for the club that we have three really talented young men that are going to go there and represent their country.

“I hope it’s a big success for them. We will keep in touch with them because they are players we are really excited about.

“Hopefully going away will make them more hungry to really compete around the squad. You have to be patient with youngsters because success isn’t always linear.”

With the trio away from training for upwards of three weeks, there will now be opportunities for other youngsters to step into senior training.

Martin uses the Under-21 side as opposition for the senior team in training games regularly, which has given him good knowledge of those next in line.

“We have a really close relationship with them and the coaches, we know them really well. They do come over a lot.

“There will be three or four gaps that people need to come over and take the chance. There are some really excellent players coming through.

“There is a lot to be excited about. The more they train with the first team the better. They get to feel it and understand what it takes.”
