Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton didn’t hold back in his response to the mounting criticism directed at quarterback Bo Nix following the team’s 26-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The defeat, part of the Broncos’ ongoing struggles this season, has placed Nix under intense scrutiny, with many questioning his ability to lead the team.
Payton, known for his no-nonsense approach, came to the defense of his young quarterback, addressing the critics head-on during the post-game press conference.
“People love to point fingers when things go wrong,” Payton said. “But to sit here and single out Bo is absurd. He’s not the sole reason we lost that game, and he’s far from the problem. If you want to criticize, look at the whole team, including me. We all need to be better.”
Nix, who joined the Broncos this season, has shown flashes of potential but has struggled with consistency. In the loss to the Seahawks, he completed 18 of 33 passes for 215 yards with one touchdown and an interception. While his performance wasn’t disastrous, it wasn’t enough to lift the Broncos to victory, and the criticism has followed closely behind.
Payton, however, made it clear that he believes in Nix’s ability to grow and improve despite the team’s recent struggles. He highlighted the importance of patience and emphasized that the Broncos’ issues go beyond just one player.
“Bo’s learning, he’s growing. He’s a competitor, and he’ll get better with time,” Payton continued. “But it’s not just about the quarterback. We’ve got to execute better as a team, we need to tighten things up across the board. That loss wasn’t on him, it was on all of us.”
The Broncos have faced a tough season so far, and their loss to the Seahawks has only added fuel to the frustrations of fans and analysts alike. However, Payton’s vocal defense of Nix indicates that the coach is standing by his quarterback for the long haul, refusing to let the young signal-caller shoulder the blame alone.
As the Broncos try to turn things around, Nix will undoubtedly remain under the microscope. However, with Payton’s support and belief in his potential, the hope is that the quarterback will find his footing and help guide the team back to winning ways. For now, Payton’s message is clear: the blame doesn’t rest solely on Bo Nix.
