5-Star Safety Recruit Shifts Momentum After Stellar USC Visit
USC Football’s efforts to strengthen its defense are yielding positive results. Trey McNutt, a highly sought-after safety, made an official visit to USC over the weekend of May 31st. According to On3 Sports’ Chad Simmons, the visit was a tremendous success.
Prior to the visit, On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine gave Ohio State a 76.3 percent chance of securing McNutt, a native of Shaker Heights, Ohio. That probability has since decreased to 59.4 percent, indicating a positive shift for USC.
USC Gains Ground on Top Safety Recruit
USC made a strong impression on McNutt, the nation’s #2 ranked safety, who had visited Ohio State 10 times and was once considered a lock for the Buckeyes.
“I had a great time at USC,” McNutt told 247 Sports. “My mom and whole family were there. My mom liked the experience and seeing what the school had to offer me. I think USC is a realistic option for me. I think they’re going to be a big factor in the rest of my recruitment. They set the tone with this visit.”
Chad Simmons, appearing on On3’s Recruiting Show, explained how USC managed to shift the momentum in McNutt’s recruitment:

“New DC, Coach [D’Anton] Anton obviously made a big impression on Trey McNutt. We know USC has an offensive juggernaut under Lincoln Riley. They want to bring in players like Trey and implement a new scheme to make the defense as strong as the offense, aiming for a national championship. Trey sees that plan and the opportunity both on and off the field in Los Angeles to ‘Build That Brand,’ which is crucial in the N.I.L. world. USC has definitely gained traction and is now leading in this recruitment.”
