Cincinnati Reds’ Head Coach Takes Bold Step Amid Injury Crisis; Jacob Hurtubise Called Up
In a strategic move amid a flurry of injuries plaguing the Cincinnati Reds, the team’s head coach made a significant call on Monday, summoning Jacob Hurtubise to the major leagues.
Hurtubise, an alumnus of Army West Point Baseball from the Class of 2020, steps onto the grand stage after his journey with the Reds organization, having joined as a free agent in 2020. His path to the majors saw him navigate through the minor leagues, including a stint with the Triple-A Louisville Bats this season, where he was rehabilitating from an injury. However, his perseverance paid off when he received the long-awaited call to join the Cincinnati lineup.
A native of Indianapolis, Hurtubise follows in the footsteps of RHP Chris Rowley, becoming the second Black Knight graduate to ascend to the major leagues. Rowley previously graced the field during parts of the 2017 and ’18 seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Hurtubise wasted no time making his mark, making his MLB debut during Monday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, where the Reds faced a tough 6-5 loss. His entry into the game came as a pinch-runner in the eighth inning, marking the beginning of what promises to be a memorable journey in the majors.
Throughout his collegiate career, Hurtubise showcased his talent, boasting a batting average of .301 over four years at Army. His junior year in 2019, which sadly coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic that truncated the 2020 season, saw him excel with a batting average of .375, accompanied by 61 starts and 26 RBIs. Additionally, he showcased his skills in the Cape Cod Baseball League during the summer of 2019, representing both the Harwich Mariners and Orleans Firebirds.
Hurtubise’s collegiate accolades include being part of two Patriot League Tournament championships and NCAA Regional Appearances with the Army team, underscoring his prowess both on and off the field.
