Bears Projected to Add ‘Devastating Pass Rusher’ Alongside Montez Sweat…

The Chicago Bears have resolved some roster uncertainties by trading Justin Fields and acquiring Pro Bowl wide receiver Keenan Allen. With these moves, attention now turns to the NFL Draft, where former USC quarterback Caleb Williams is expected to be the top pick. However, the Bears also hold the 9th overall selection. Previously, they were eyeing elite wide receiver prospects, but with Allen onboard, focus shifts to other areas.

ESPN’s draft analyst Mel Kiper suggests that Chicago will bolster their pass rush by adding Jared Verse, an outstanding edge defender, alongside Montez Sweat. Prior to acquiring Allen, Kiper believed the Bears would prioritize wide receiver talent, but now they have flexibility. Verse, considered one of the top edge rushers in the 2024 draft class, boasts exceptional athleticism and is ranked highly by Pro Football Focus (PFF).

While Verse has some areas to improve, including occasional inconsistency, his potential is undeniable. Kiper acknowledges this, suggesting the Bears shouldn’t overlook Verse’s talent with the 9th pick. The addition of Verse could significantly strengthen Chicago’s defense, complementing Sweat’s impressive performance in the previous season.

Despite Sweat’s standout season, the Bears still lagged in total sacks, prompting a need for further reinforcement. If they don’t opt for a tackle with their pick, selecting Verse seems likely to address this gap. With strategic moves in the offseason and promising prospects, the Bears aim to be competitive contenders in the NFC North, pending the performance of their rookie quarterback and the success of their draft selections.
