Despite reported interest from Southampton, Burnley has firmly rejected any possibility of a deal involving winger Manuel Benson in the upcoming January transfer window. Rumors surfaced regarding Southampton’s desire to explore a loan deal with an option to buy Benson, who has had limited playing time for Burnley this season. The 26-year-old, who signed a new four-year contract in August, was a key contributor to Burnley’s Championship title-winning campaign last season, scoring 13 goals, including a crucial winner at Ewood Park.
However, Benson has struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup during the current Premier League season, making only one start and totaling five appearances. Southampton, among other clubs, is reportedly interested in a potential January move for the winger. Still, the Burnley Express asserts that there is “no chance” of Benson making a switch to St. Mary’s.
Relations between Burnley and Southampton became strained during the summer as Burnley pursued a permanent move for last season’s loan star Nathan Tella, who ultimately joined Bayer Leverkusen. Despite talkSPORT reporting Benson’s inclusion in Southampton’s list of targets, Burnley remain steadfast in their stance against any potential transfer.
Currently, Russell Martin’s Burnley sits third in the championship, trailing Ipswich Town by three points. On the other hand, Southampton, unbeaten in their last 17 games, aims for an immediate return to the Premier League after suffering relegation last season.
