“We called, and we tried”: Paolo Maldini drops worrying claims as he sheds more light on Milan’s Messi pursuit…

Paolo Maldini has provided additional insights into his pursuit of Lionel Messi for AC Milan during his tenure as technical director. In a recent interview with La Repubblica, Maldini elaborated on his previous remarks about attempting to secure Messi’s signature. He recounted that he made efforts for ten days to bring Messi to Milan after the Argentine forward left Barcelona. Maldini clarified that despite their attempts, the endeavor eventually proved unfeasible.

Maldini’s revelations stem from a podcast recording earlier in the month, where he discussed various aspects of AC Milan, including his ambitious but unsuccessful pursuit of Messi. La Gazzetta dello Sport had subsequently published a follow-up report, shedding some light on the context of Milan’s interest in Messi and the influence of Inter’s efforts in the background.

In the recent interview with La Repubblica, Maldini delved into his departure from Milan at the end of the previous season, recounting discussions with owner Gerry Cardinale and reflecting on his overall contributions.

Addressing the Messi pursuit once more, Maldini shared that Milan contacted Messi when he became a free agent after leaving Barcelona in August. Despite their efforts, the pursuit remained an idea, as Maldini learned that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) was already in advanced talks with Messi, as communicated by Leonardo.
