Boston Bruins have officially added tenacious forward to their active roster, giving head coach Jim Montgomery a significant boost. The 26-year-old Koepke has impressed everyone at Bruins training camp with his relentless work ethic and determination, earning a spot on the opening night lineup.
Standing at 6-foot-1 and 204 pounds, Koepke has had to battle his way onto a roster filled with towering players. The native of Two Harbors, Minnesota, accepted the challenge head-on and turned what seemed like a long shot into reality, making his Bruins debut on the fourth line against the Florida Panthers on opening night.
Although the Bruins were handed a tough 6-4 loss, Koepke and his linemates—Johnny Beecher and Mark Kastelic—were bright spots in an otherwise difficult game.
“I think it’s been good,” Koepke said after practice at Warrior Arena. “I’ve been learning a lot. This group has been really welcoming, and the coaching staff has helped me adjust to the systems. I’m happy with how I’ve been playing. They’re keeping me on my toes and pushing me to give my best.”
Koepke earned his place on the team with a solid preseason, tallying a goal and an assist in five games, along with eight shots on goal. Competing for a bottom-six forward spot was no easy task, especially against bigger players like Justin Brazeau (6-foot-6), Max Jones (6-3), and Riley Tufte (6-6). But what Koepke lacks in size compared to his teammates, he makes up for with grit, hustle, and speed.
Bruins coach Jim Montgomery has taken note of Koepke’s high-energy play.
“I like the way he manages the puck,” Montgomery said. “He’s fast, tenacious, and creates a lot of turnovers, which lead to scoring chances and more offensive zone time. He’s been doing that consistently, and I really like that aspect of his game.”
A standout at Minnesota Duluth, where he was a Hobey Baker nominee, Koepke was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Lightning in 2022, playing 17 games and recording a goal. After a brief stint last season, Koepke signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Bruins in July 2024, seeking a fresh opportunity.
“All you can ask for is a chance,” Koepke said. “I knew there would be opportunities here, and it was just up to me to show what I can do to help the team win. That’s always the goal. I want to bring my best every time I’m on the ice.”
For Bruins fans, Koepke promises to bring energy and determination to the lineup.
“They can expect a lot of speed,” Koepke said. “I’m going to bring energy to the forecheck, be relentless, and never give up—whether it’s the first, second, or third effort. I just want to be a great teammate and help this team win in any way I can.”
With his spot on the roster secured, Koepke has accomplished his mission of making the NHL and contributing to one of hockey’s most storied franchises.
