The Vancouver Canucks have officially announced the signing of 27-year-old veteran Jake DeBrusk to a seven-year contract worth $38.5 million. This addition comes as the team prepares to showcase its off-season acquisitions, with DeBrusk expected to play a pivotal role.
As the Canucks gear up to open their regular season on Wednesday against the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena, fans are eager to see how these new players will impact the team’s performance. DeBrusk’s arrival follows concerns over Elias Pettersson’s support from wingers and the power play’s effectiveness last season. DeBrusk will start the year on Pettersson’s line, bringing fresh energy and skill.
In addition to being a dynamic scorer, DeBrusk will also feature prominently on the Canucks’ first power-play unit. His positioning in the bumper spot, known for generating one-timers, complements J.T. Miller’s playmaking from the left wing, reminiscent of the effectiveness seen with Bo Horvat in that role.
DeBrusk expressed enthusiasm for his new position, praising Miller’s ability to deliver precise passes. “I’m just trying to keep my stick on the ice and capitalize on the chances I get,” he said, drawing on his previous experience where he scored eight power-play goals last season with the Boston Bruins.
Alongside fellow free-agent addition Daniel Sprong, DeBrusk is set to flank Pettersson at even strength. Coach Rick Tocchet emphasized the importance of creating a strong net-front presence and leveraging their shooting abilities. “We need to ensure we’re connected and ready to capitalize on chaotic plays,” he noted.
Pettersson, who previously played with Ilya Mikheyev, commented on the budding chemistry with DeBrusk and Sprong, highlighting their ability to find open spaces and create scoring opportunities. “Small details can lead to big chances,” he said.
In roster news, the Canucks placed defenseman Mark Friedman on waivers to assign him to the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, citing salary cap mechanics. Meanwhile, winger Dakota Joshua, currently recovering from testicular cancer, is expected to join the team on their upcoming road trip.
As the Canucks embark on this new season, all eyes will be on how these off-season additions perform and help elevate the team’s prospects.
