The Houston Astros may be eyeing a blockbuster solution at third base as Alex Bregman explores free agency. While retaining their homegrown slugger remains an option, there’s growing speculation about the Astros targeting St. Louis Cardinals star Nolan Arenado if Bregman departs.
Arenado, an eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner, has been a cornerstone at the hot corner for over a decade. However, the 34-year-old has shown signs of offensive decline. After back-to-back 30-homer, 100-RBI seasons in 2021 and 2022, his numbers dipped in 2024. Arenado slashed .272/.325/.394 with 16 home runs, 23 doubles, and 71 RBIs over 635 plate appearances, marking his lowest OPS (.719) since his rookie year with the Colorado Rockies in 2013.
Despite the decline, Arenado’s elite defensive skills make him a valuable asset for teams looking to contend. CBS Sports’ Dayn Perry highlighted his potential fit with Houston, noting that Arenado’s pull-heavy hitting style could thrive at Minute Maid Park, particularly with its short left-field porch.
Arenado is under contract through 2027 as part of an eight-year, $260 million extension he originally signed with Colorado. However, his declining offensive output may require the Cardinals to absorb some of his salary to facilitate a trade. Arenado has previously waived his no-trade clause to join St. Louis, suggesting he might be open to another move if the situation aligns with his goals.
For the Astros, Arenado could provide a proven, defensively exceptional replacement should Bregman sign elsewhere. His veteran leadership and postseason experience align well with Houston’s win-now mentality.
Astros general manager Dana Brown has remained tight-lipped about specific offseason plans, but Arenado’s name continues to swirl in trade rumors. While Bregman’s future with the team remains uncertain, exploring Arenado as an alternative could ensure stability at third base and keep Houston competitive in its pursuit of another championship.
This potential move reflects the Astros’ ambition to remain a powerhouse in the American League, and Arenado’s proven track record makes him an intriguing option for their 2025 roster.
