The New York Mets have officially completed a major trade, landing a four-time All-Star slugger in a $175 million deal, making waves across the league. The move comes amid speculation surrounding Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, whose power-hitting potential has attracted suitors including the San Francisco Giants.
The Giants, who have long sought a dominant power hitter to fill the void left by Barry Bonds, are eager to add a home run threat to manager Bob Melvin’s lineup. Alonso has been a core presence in the Mets’ batting order since debuting in 2019, with 226 career home runs that place him third in Mets franchise history. Despite a dip in 2024 with 34 home runs, 88 RBIs, and a .788 OPS—the lowest in his career—Alonso’s slugging ability remains invaluable. His back-to-back 40+ homer, 100+ RBI seasons in 2022 and 2023 showcase the power the Giants have sorely missed. In fact, the last time San Francisco saw a hitter with 30+ homers was Bonds in 2004.
There’s speculation that Giants president of baseball operations, Buster Posey, could make a hard push for Alonso if he enters free agency. AMNY’s Joe Pantorno predicts a six-year, $175 million deal with San Francisco, but also notes a contingency. According to Pantorno, if the Mets manage to land other top targets like Juan Soto or ace Corbin Burnes, Alonso could be retained in New York.
This trade marks a pivotal moment as both the Mets and Giants aim to bolster their lineups for 2025, and Alonso’s move could spark further offseason deals as both teams continue to seek star talent.
