In a strategic roster adjustment, the San Francisco 49ers have announced the signing of cornerback Nick McCloud to their practice squad. The acquisition is part of ongoing efforts to enhance depth in the secondary. To accommodate McCloud, the team released safety Adrian Amos, a seasoned player who quickly became a fan favorite after joining the team in mid-October.
McCloud, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 193 pounds, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills in 2021. Over his four-year career, McCloud has played in 40 games, including 16 starts, with stints at the Cincinnati Bengals (2021) and New York Giants (2022-24). His on-field contributions include 74 tackles, 10 passes defended, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 1.5 sacks, and one interception. Additionally, McCloud has experience in the playoffs, recording tackles and a forced fumble in two postseason appearances.
Most recently with the Giants, McCloud played seven games in the 2024 season, starting five. In that span, he tallied 13 tackles, a pass deflection, and a tackle on special teams before his release on November 5. McCloud, a Rock Hill, South Carolina native, is a product of North Carolina State and Notre Dame, where he showcased his defensive prowess with 139 tackles, 28 passes defended, and four interceptions over 49 collegiate games.
Adrian Amos, the 6-foot, 214-pound safety, joined the 49ers’ practice squad in October and saw action in one game before his release. The decision to move forward with McCloud indicates the 49ers’ focus on enhancing their pass coverage and adding versatility to their defensive unit as they prepare for the latter half of the season.
