As MLB’s free agency period approaches, it promises to be a game-changing offseason with several marquee players available, including 2023 NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell and 2021 Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes. The New York Mets are expected to be at the heart of the action, determined to reshape their franchise and build a contender for 2025. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden suggests the Mets could have an offseason as thrilling as their recent postseason run, with big-time acquisitions in sight.
“The Mets will be chasing Corbin Burnes and every other top starting pitcher on the market. They’ll be involved in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, look to bring back Pete Alonso, and pursue comparable talent on the open market,” Bowden wrote. “For Mets fans, the second half of the season and the playoff run were fun—lots of fun—but this offseason has a chance to be even better.”
Bowden believes that if the Mets manage to acquire Juan Soto, it could be a home-run offseason. But even if they miss out on Soto, Mets owner Steve Cohen has the financial flexibility to make significant moves, potentially adding multiple star players. While it wouldn’t be a championship win just yet, bringing in elite talent could be key to building a future title-winning roster.
For Mets fans, the anticipation of big moves this winter offers a beacon of excitement during the colder months. Bowden’s optimism suggests that, while the 2024 postseason run was memorable, the upcoming offseason could set the stage for even greater achievements.
