Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins remain silent amid swirling trade and contract extension controversies in the NHL. Since being drafted in 2015, Crosby, dubbed ‘The Next One,’ has been a mainstay for the Penguins, growing from a rookie into the team captain and core player.
With his contract nearing expiration, rumors are rife about whether Crosby will stay with the Pittsburgh Penguins or choose a new team for his final NHL run. Crosby previously expressed his desire to retire as a Penguin, but no updates on his extension have been revealed.
NHL insider Nick Kypreos reported that Crosby emphasized he is in no rush to sign a new contract, leaving a cryptic message: “Read into that however you want.” Despite growing speculation since last year, fans expected an update by July 1, but the continued silence has raised many eyebrows, according to NHL Trade Rumor.
The Penguins, like all teams, are aiming to win the Stanley Cup in 2025. While team GM Kyle Dubas has mentioned he doesn’t want to replace core members, the current roster’s capacity to handle the pressure is questionable. However, given Crosby’s legacy with the Penguins, there’s a strong chance he will stay.

NHL Expert Suggests Sidney Crosby May Sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs
Among various rumors and potential team speculations, TSN’s Bryan Hayes suggested that Sidney Crosby might sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hayes believes that if Crosby waits until his contract expires next year, signing with the Leafs would be monumental, stating, “it doesn’t get bigger than that in the hockey world.”
Hayes argued that Crosby signing with the Leafs would make him “the greatest Canadian captain of all time,” putting him in the company of legends like Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Mark Messier. He added, “One of the great winners of all time… Come home, come to Canada, end the Canadian Cup drought as a Maple Leaf. [John] Tavares leaves, Sid comes in. It all works out for everybody.”
Crosby’s agent, Pat Brisson, mentioned he would discuss the future with Crosby, and plans will follow accordingly. If the Penguins aim to remain Stanley Cup contenders, they will need to make significant roster changes.
