Offseason Checklist for the Boston Bruins
With the playoffs down to the final two teams, the rest of the league, including the Boston Bruins, are gearing up for offseason moves. Here’s a look at what the Bruins need to focus on in the coming months.
Overview of the Bruins’ Season
Despite question marks at the start of the season after losing key players Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, the Bruins nearly clinched the Atlantic Division and extended their playoff streak to eight years. They advanced past Toronto in the first round but were eliminated by Florida in the second round. Now, with increased cap and roster flexibility, GM Don Sweeney has an opportunity to reshape the team.
Offseason Priorities
1. Add an Impact Center
The Bruins need to replace their top two centers lost from the previous year. Last season, Charlie Coyle and Pavel Zacha managed the tough minutes, but with $21 million in cap space, the Bruins can now seek a stronger middleman. While true No. 1 centers aren’t available, second-line options like Elias Lindholm, Chandler Stephenson, Sean Monahan, and Matt Duchene could provide the needed depth and offense.
2. Goalie Decisions
The Bruins’ high-end goalie tandem of Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark may become too costly. Swayman is expected to receive a significant raise, potentially exceeding $6 million annually, which would make Ullmark’s $5 million salary difficult to justify. Trading Ullmark seems likely, though his no-trade clause could complicate matters. If traded, the Bruins must decide whether rookie Brandon Bussi or a more experienced veteran will back up Swayman.
3. Re-sign or Replace Jake DeBrusk
Jake DeBrusk, a pending unrestricted free agent, has had a fluctuating role with the Bruins. The team must decide whether to commit long-term to DeBrusk, who has shown consistent 40-point seasons but only one 50-point campaign. A new contract could exceed $6 million annually. If not re-signed, options like Tyler Toffoli, Vladimir Tarasenko, David Perron, Teuvo Teravainen, or Tyler Bertuzzi could serve as replacements.
4. Add Depth
The Bruins will need to fill several roster spots with role players, similar to last offseason. Pending UFAs like James van Riemsdyk, Danton Heinen, Milan Lucic, and Kevin Shattenkirk will likely be replaced. Additionally, the team will need to fill spots left by Shattenkirk, Matt Grzelcyk, and Derek Forbort on defense, with a focus on affordable yet reliable options.
