Pirates Recall Jose Hernandez, Option Jack Suwinski to Indianapolis!

In response to a depleted bullpen following back-to-back extra-inning games against the San Francisco Giants, the Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled left-handed pitcher Jose Hernandez from Triple-A. To make space on the active roster, outfielder Jack Suwinski has been optioned to Indianapolis.

Suwinski has struggled significantly this season, despite occasional flashes of potential. His current statistics are underwhelming, with a batting average of .174, an on-base percentage of .268, and a slugging percentage of .297 across 157 plate appearances. This results in a .565 OPS and four home runs. While there has been some improvement in his strikeout rate—from 32 percent last year to 25.5 percent this season—he still whiffs on 24.3 percent of pitches. Suwinski’s performance has contributed to his -0.6 WAR, second lowest on the team, trailing only Rowdy Tellez (-0.8).

Hernandez, now making his third appearance on the main roster this season, has shown promise in his limited major league outings. He has a 1-1 record with a 1.93 ERA, four strikeouts, and three walks over six games. However, his performance in Triple-A has been less consistent, with 11 earned runs allowed over 13 innings.

The Pirates hope that Suwinski can regain his form in the minors, while Hernandez provides much-needed reinforcement for the bullpen. This strategic move aims to bolster the team’s pitching options as they continue their season.
