Breaking News: Steelers in Talks to Sign Promising Depth Edge Rusher!

The Pittsburgh Steelers are addressing gaps in their roster, particularly in the wide receiver position and cornerback depth. However, another area that requires attention is the backup for T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith in the edge rusher position.

While discussions to bring back Bud Dupree fell through as he joined the Los Angeles Chargers, Nick Herbig stands as the sole established edge rusher behind Watt and Highsmith. Consequently, the Steelers are actively seeking to bolster their options through free agency. Fortunately, there are several compelling candidates still available in the market.

Markus Golden emerges as a logical choice given his previous stint with the Steelers. He showcased his value as a depth pass rusher last season, tallying four sacks and six tackles for loss in limited playing time. Re-signing Golden would provide the Steelers with a dependable and familiar asset.

David Mayo presents another viable option, having demonstrated consistency as a depth edge player. During the previous season with the Commanders, he contributed six tackles for loss and two sacks, along with 39 total tackles. Mayo’s experience since 2015 makes him a seasoned presence capable of filling the role effectively.

Anthony Barr, a four-time Pro Bowler, offers an intriguing prospect despite a limited appearance for the Vikings last season. His brief stint with the Cowboys in 2022 showcased his enduring talent. The Steelers have had success with veteran acquisitions in the past, making Barr a candidate worth considering, especially for training camp.

While discussions with Barr proceed, the Steelers should explore opportunities with other available options like Golden and Mayo to solidify their edge rusher depth ahead of the upcoming season.
