Insider Reveals Why Duke Basketball Opts Out of Inaugural $1 Million NIL Event in Las Vegas!

Amidst anticipation surrounding college basketball’s newest event, the Duke Blue Devils have chosen not to participate, citing a host of reasons including an already formidable non-conference schedule.

Speculation had linked the Blue Devils to the inaugural Name, Image, and Likeness tournament slated for Las Vegas in November. However, according to CBS Sports, Duke’s absence from the field has been confirmed. Instead, teams like Alabama, Houston, Notre Dame, Oregon, Rutgers, San Diego State, and Texas A&M are set to feature, with discussions ongoing for the final participating team.

The tournament promises a significant financial incentive, with a collective $1 million payout allocated to the program involved, intended for distribution among the players. Additionally, players stand to gain further NIL opportunities through event sponsors.

While the format of the tournament remains undisclosed, reports suggest the potential for a two-bracket system, possibly leading to two champions emerging.

Although Duke may not be partaking this season, reports indicate their potential involvement in 2025, with expectations of the tournament doubling in size from eight to sixteen teams. Notably, participating schools are committed to a three-year stint in the event.

Looking ahead, schools like Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan, Syracuse, and Virginia are reportedly being targeted for inclusion in the 2025 edition.

Despite their absence from the NIL event, Duke’s non-conference schedule boasts high-profile matchups, including a clash against Kansas in November in Las Vegas. Additionally, games against Arizona, Kentucky, Illinois, and an SEC opponent are set to showcase the Blue Devils’ competitive prowess.

With potential NBA prospects Cooper Flagg and Khaman Maluach on the roster, head coach Jon Scheyer’s leadership will undoubtedly draw attention throughout the season.
