Brian Kelly, the head coach of the LSU Tigers, has made a significant announcement regarding the team’s receiving corps for the upcoming 2024 season. With star receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. moving on to the NFL as first-round draft picks, all eyes are on Kyren Lacy, who is poised to take on a leadership role and deliver a standout performance on the field.
Hailing from Thibodaux, Louisiana, Lacy emerged as a key player for the Tigers in the 2023 season, connecting with Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels for 30 receptions, totaling 558 yards and seven touchdowns. Despite ranking third on the team in receiving yards and touchdown receptions, Lacy’s impressive average of 18.60 yards per catch outshone his counterparts Nabers and Thomas Jr., both of whom were drafted in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Known for his big-play ability, Lacy recorded five games with over 20 yards per reception last season and showcased his consistency by making receptions in 10 out of 13 games. As he enters his third season at LSU as a fifth-year senior, Lacy has reportedly elevated his game and assumed a more vocal leadership role on the field, which is crucial for the Tigers as they navigate a talented yet inexperienced wide receiver group.
Standing at 6’2″ and weighing 215 lbs., Lacy presents a formidable presence on the perimeter, posing a matchup challenge for opposing defenses. With an array of talented receivers vying for positions in the lineup, including CJ Daniels, Zavion Thomas, Aaron Anderson, Shelton Sampson, and Kyle Parker, Lacy is expected to lead the pack as the team’s primary target alongside Chris Hilton.
Having previously played for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns before transferring to LSU, Lacy brings a wealth of experience to the table, with 104 catches for 1,494 yards and 17 touchdowns throughout his collegiate career. Under the guidance of co-offensive coordinators Joe Sloan and Cortez Hankton, Lacy is poised to thrive in the Tigers’ offensive system, with quarterback Garrett Nussmeier likely to rely heavily on him as the season unfolds.
