Celebrations are in order as the Denver Nuggets have finally decided to pay tribute to the legendary contributions of Nikola Jokic and Carmelo Anthony by retiring the iconic No. 15 jersey. This decision comes following a suggestion from former Nuggets head coach George Karl, marking a significant acknowledgment of their impact on the team.
During his tenure from 2005 to 2013, Karl steered the Nuggets, achieving notable success including being awarded the NBA Coach of the Year in his final season. Despite a commendable record, the team’s playoff advancements were limited, reaching beyond the first round only once during Karl’s leadership.
Carmelo Anthony, a pivotal figure for the Nuggets for over seven seasons, earned acclaim as a four-time NBA All-Star and All-NBA selection. Although he didn’t guide the team to an NBA Finals, his tenure is revered in Nuggets history.

Nikola Jokic, on the other hand, has left an indelible mark on the Nuggets in his nine-season journey. Garnering two NBA MVP titles and leading the team to their inaugural championship in 2023, his impact surpasses mere statistics.
The notion of retiring a jersey number for multiple players isn’t unprecedented. The NBA’s decision to retire Bill Russell’s No. 6 league-wide in 2022 set a precedent. Several teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers, and Phoenix Suns, have independently retired the same number for different players.
Furthermore, instances like the New York Knicks retiring No. 15 for Dick McGuire and Earl Monroe, and the Portland Trail Blazers honoring both Terry Porter and Bob Gross with the No. 30 jersey, illustrate the rarity yet significance of such gestures.
“It was a petty maneuver. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, we’ve got numbers to choose from.’ It was like, ‘Here, take this one, you got 15.’ And y’all put Jokić in the middle of that. He don’t know what the f–k going on.
“He could’ve been trying to pay homage, I don’t know. … But what I believe, is that they gave him No. 15 to try to erase what I did.”
The dilemma surrounding the No. 15 jersey for Anthony and Jokic has sparked discussion. Both players have left an indelible mark on the franchise and are likely bound for the Basketball Hall of Fame. Recent comments from Anthony hint at mixed sentiments, suggesting the jersey assignment to Jokic might have carried undertones.
