Cifuentes has come to the defense of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who has faced scrutiny for his performances for QPR.
Despite being in goal for the team’s recent 4-0 victory over Leeds United, securing the club’s place in the Championship for another year, Begovic has been targeted by fans for errors, notably a mistake against Plymouth Argyle.
During the Plymouth game, the 36-year-old mishandled a corner, resulting in a goal for the opposing team and a 1-1 draw. Despite his extensive Premier League experience, such errors have led to criticism from supporters.
However, Cifuentes has stood by Begovic, emphasizing that while it’s easy to criticize goalkeepers for mistakes, the Bosnian has played a crucial role in the team’s recent successes. He highlighted Begovic’s performances in wins against Hull and Swansea, where he made key saves that secured vital points for QPR.
Begovic joined QPR last summer as a free agent after leaving Everton. Despite occasional errors, he has been a significant addition to the team, making 45 league appearances this season and contributing to the club’s survival in the Championship.
While he may not be the long-term first-choice goalkeeper for QPR, Begovic’s experience and contributions make him an important presence in the squad as they prepare for another season in the Championship.
