NFL analyst Bill Barnwell has weighed in on what he believes the Las Vegas Raiders should do in the upcoming NFL Draft, advocating for a trade-down strategy. With significant positional needs and facing the challenge of revamping under a new coaching regime led by Antonio Pierce, the Raiders are at a pivotal juncture in their draft decision-making process.
The Raiders hold the 13th overall pick in the draft, offering them various avenues to address their roster deficiencies. Options range from selecting a quarterback, offensive lineman, or cornerback to potentially trading back to amass additional draft capital. Barnwell suggests that trading down could be the wisest course of action for the Raiders.
Highlighting the Raiders’ past draft struggles, particularly in yielding impactful players from top-100 picks during the Jon Gruden and Josh McDaniels eras, Barnwell emphasizes the need for a strategic shift. He points out that despite the recent departures of some veterans, the Raiders have faced challenges in fielding competent starters due to previous draft disappointments.
Regarding the quarterback position, Barnwell acknowledges the need for an upgrade over current starter Aidan O’Connell. However, he cautions against overestimating the immediate impact a quarterback can have in closing the gap with the perennial division powerhouse, the Kansas City Chiefs. Barnwell suggests that defeating the Chiefs consistently requires more than just a quarterback upgrade, citing the Raiders’ December victory over the Chiefs as a rare occurrence that cannot be relied upon regularly.
While Barnwell advocates for trading down to address multiple positional needs, he acknowledges the unlikelihood of such a move, particularly under the leadership of General Manager Tom Telesco, who has a history of avoiding trade-down scenarios. Despite the potential benefits of acquiring additional picks to address long-term needs in areas like the offensive line, secondary, and running back, Barnwell remains skeptical about the Raiders’ willingness to execute such a strategy.
As the NFL Draft approaches, scheduled for April 25-27, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan, the Raiders face crucial decisions regarding their draft strategy, with the 13th overall pick currently in their possession.
