Red Wings Send Ville Husso to Grand Rapids for Conditioning
In a move aimed at boosting his performance, the Detroit Red Wings have decided to loan goaltender Ville Husso to the Grand Rapids Griffins, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Red Wings, for conditioning.
Husso, 29 years old, has been a part of the Red Wings lineup for the 2023-24 season, appearing in 19 games. During this time, he’s managed a 9-5-2 record with a 3.55 goals-against average and an 0.892 save percentage. Notably, Husso previously had a successful stint with the Griffins on January 26, where he stopped all 25 shots faced against the Belleville Senators.
The Finnish goaltender, standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 205 pounds, spent the entire 2022-23 season with the Red Wings, where he played 56 games, earning a record of 26-22-7 with a 3.11 goals-against average, an 0.896 save percentage, and four shutouts. Originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Husso has built a solid record across his NHL career, amassing a 69-40-16 record with a 3.01 goals-against average, a 0.902 save percentage, and seven shutouts since the 2020-21 season.
Moreover, Husso has showcased his talent in the AHL as well. In 130 games with the Chicago Wolves, San Antonio Rampage, and Griffins, he’s earned a record of 51-54-16 with a 2.68 goals-against average, a 0.909 save percentage, and 11 shutouts. Notably, he was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team in the 2017–18 season.
Prior to his North American career, Husso played for three seasons with HIFK in Finland’s SM-Liiga from 2013 to 2016. During this time, he demonstrated his prowess with a 60-33-21 record and 10 shutouts in 121 appearances. His exceptional performance during the 2015-16 season earned him the Urpo Ylönen Award as the league’s top goaltender.
Internationally, Husso has represented Finland at various tournaments, including the IIHF World Championship in 2018, where he showed his skills with a 1-2-0 record and a 2.33 goals-against average. He was also part of the gold-medal-winning team at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship and the bronze-medal-winning squad at the 2013 IIHF World Under-18 Championship. Additionally, he participated in the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
With his talent and experience, Husso’s conditioning stint in Grand Rapids aims to further enhance his performance and contribute to the success of the Detroit Red Wings.
