Jonathan Abram expresses optimism as he commits to another stint with the New Orleans Saints, aiming to capitalize on the momentum gained in his debut season with the team.
Following the departure of several defensive backs during the free agency period, the Saints have been proactive in securing vital depth within their roster. Among the recent signings, Ugo Amadi was the first to ink a deal, swiftly followed by the retention of seasoned safety, Jonathan Abram, for another one-year term.
Entering his sixth season in the NFL, Abram has found a sense of stability with the Saints after a journey that saw him drafted by the Raiders in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Despite a tenure split between the Raiders, Green Bay Packers, and Seattle Seahawks, Abram’s arrival in New Orleans in the 2023 free agency marked a turning point. Although initially waived and relegated to the practice squad post-training camp, he eventually reclaimed his spot on the active roster and made significant contributions, culminating in 26 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception by the end of the season. Now, both Abram and the Saints are eager to build upon this foundation in the upcoming season.
Abram’s presence adds depth to the Saints’ defensive backfield, which is somewhat thin. Currently, Tyrann Mathieu and Jordan Howden headline as the starting safeties, with Abram and Amadi serving as valuable reserves. The cornerback positions boast Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo as primary options, supported by Alontae Taylor, Rejzohn Wright, and Faion Hicks in backup roles.
While speculation persists regarding a potential trade involving Lattimore, the Saints remain steadfast in their pursuit of defensive solidity. As long as Lattimore remains within their ranks, the team anticipates a robust secondary performance in the forthcoming season. Furthermore, the Saints are expected to bolster their defensive roster through both the draft and additional free agency acquisitions.
