The Twins GM explained why they sent four pitchers to minor league camp…

After their 3-0 defeat to the Atlanta Braves at Cool Today Field on Monday afternoon, the Twins made the decision to reassign four pitchers to minor-league spring training.

The announcement included left-hander Brent Headrick and right-handers Matt Canterino and Simeon Woods Richardson being optioned to St. Paul, while right-hander David Festa was reassigned to the Twins’ minor league camp.

These moves were expected, given the proximity of Opening Day for both the Twins and the Saints. As the season approaches, it’s crucial for starting pitchers to build up their innings. All four pitchers sent back to the minor-league camp are likely candidates to join the Saints’ starting rotation at the beginning of the season.

Pitchers like Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan, Bailey Ober, and Chris Paddack seem to have secured four of the starting spots for the Twins. Anthony DeSclafani and Louie Varland may vie for the fifth spot, which might not be immediately necessary due to early-season off days.

It’s anticipated that Varland will start in St. Paul initially and be called up when needed. Alongside Varland, Headrick, Woods Richardson, and Festa are expected to be part of the Saints’ starting rotation. Randy Dobnak, who was reassigned earlier, will also likely feature regularly as a starter, along with veterans like Caleb Boushley.

Festa, ranked as Twins Daily’s #5 prospect heading into the season, had limited action this spring, pitching just one inning. Headrick had a solid showing, allowing only two runs over 6 1/3 innings. Canterino demonstrated his talent with a strong performance in his two outings, while Woods Richardson impressed with his improved velocity and performance, showcasing his potential for the upcoming season.

These pitchers not only form the core of the St. Paul Saints’ starting rotation but also serve as depth for the Twins’ pitching staff in 2024. As the season progresses, they’ll need to remain prepared for potential call-ups.

Following these roster adjustments, the Twins now have 46 players in spring training camp, including 10 non-roster players across various positions.
