The Seattle Mariners have dealt right-hand pitcher Darren McCaughan to the Miami Marlins in exchange for monetary considerations as spring training draws closer.

According to Jordan McPherson of the Marlins on “X:”

RHP Darren McCaughan is being acquired by the #Marlins from Seattle for monetary considerations, according to a source. Just five MLB appearances (one start) with a 7.07 ERA in 14 innings pitched. 3.03 ERA in three outings in 2023. The Sweeper exhibits promising results (57.9% whiff rate in a small sample size).

McCaughan may have an opportunity to make the Marlins’ Opening Day roster. Braxton Garrett, Jesus Luzardo, Edward Cabrera, Eury Perez, and other young players make up the rotation; however, Sandy Alcantara will miss the entire season due to Tommy John surgery. After finishing the regular season with 84 victories, Miami earned a wild card into the National League playoffs.

McCaughan never truly got his chance with the Mariners. Though he was a dependable Triple-A starter who was frequently mentioned as a depth piece for Seattle, he was unable to break through the young pitching logjam in Seattle.

In 2023, the 27-year-old had a 5.83 ERA while going 7-8 in the minor leagues. It is well known that the PCL is a hitter-friendly league.

Starting in 2024, the Mariners’ starting lineup will consist of Bryan Woo, George Kirby, Logan Gilbert, Bryce Miller, and Luis Castillo. Should a depth starter be required, Emerson Hancock, a former first-round pick, will probably be called upon.

Seattle was third in the American League West after finishing 88-74 in the previous campaign. Over the final weekend of the season, they lost by 1.0 game to miss the playoffs.
