Cardinals Have Had ‘Ongoing Talks’ With Ex-Astros Hurler To Bolster Rotation
In their ongoing efforts to strengthen the team this offseason, the St. Louis Cardinals have been engaged in continuous discussions with former Houston Astros pitcher Phil Maton, according to information from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold. Despite making several moves during the current offseason, the Cardinals are still looking to address some gaps in their roster, particularly in the bullpen.
While St. Louis has made intriguing additions to their relief corps, the bullpen remains an area of concern, given its subpar performance last season. Sources suggest that the Cardinals have been in talks with Maton, an Illinois native who spent the past two-plus seasons with the Astros. Notably, Maton showcased his prowess in 2023, recording a 3.00 ERA in 68 appearances, complemented by an impressive 74-to-25 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Derrick Goold emphasized the validity of the ongoing talks, highlighting that the Cardinals are actively pursuing Maton, among other potential options. Additionally, there have been discussions regarding right-handed reliever Ryan Brasier.
Maton, a seasoned seven-year veteran in the major leagues, boasts a career ERA of 4.25, supported by a commendable 398-to-136 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Landing a pitcher of Maton’s caliber would undoubtedly bolster the Cardinals’ bullpen and contribute significantly to the team’s overall improvement. The Cardinals, already in a better position, are eyeing Maton as a valuable addition to further fortify their roster heading into the upcoming season.
