Chicago Bears icon Brian Urlacher has offered strategic counsel to the franchise, recommending they trade quarterback Justin Fields and opt for Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
The 2022 Heisman Trophy recipient, Williams, has emerged as a highly regarded prospect, creating a dilemma for the Bears as they weigh the decision to either retain Fields or build their future around the accomplished USC quarterback.
Despite a temporary decline in performance during the previous season, Williams maintains a sterling reputation. Prior to the 2022 college football season, he made a transition from Oklahoma to USC alongside coach Lincoln Riley, swiftly establishing himself as one of the premier quarterbacks in the collegiate arena.
In his sophomore year, Williams impressively notched 42 touchdowns with a mere five interceptions. The 2023 season saw him accumulate 3,633 passing yards, contributing 30 touchdowns against five interceptions, although the Trojans fell short of the lofty preseason expectations.
Drawing comparisons to two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, Williams is renowned for his adeptness at eluding pressure and executing remarkable throws from unconventional angles. Now, the Bears confront a pivotal decision that will shape the trajectory of their franchise.
Securing the top pick in the NFL Draft, a result of a prior deal that allowed the Carolina Panthers to select quarterback Bryce Young first, the Bears face the dilemma of either retaining Fields and fortifying other positions through a trade-down or opting for the promising Williams.
Urlacher, reflecting on the Bears’ number one pick, asserted, “I would have drafted C.J. Stroud last year, so you know… they had the number one pick last year. I think they have to take Caleb [Williams].”
Acknowledging Fields’ commendable performance in the previous season, Urlacher emphasized the need to consider Williams, stating, “If you don’t take him and he turns out to be great, but having said that, Justin Fields played well this season. Last year as well. It’s tough.”
Williams boasts an impressive college career, amassing a 23-10 record as a starter with 93 touchdowns and only 14 interceptions, surpassing 10,000 passing yards. His dynamic playstyle is underscored by 21 rushing touchdowns during his two seasons at USC, featuring 10 games with five or more touchdowns—a statistic surpassed only by Mahomes in the College Football Playoff era, according to ESPN Stats and Info.
Given the presence of Fields on the Bears roster, the possibility of trading him down in the draft arises. Fields, selected at No. 11 in 2021, has showcased incremental improvement each year, despite not leading the team to a winning record thus far.
Urlacher advocates for drafting Williams and trading Fields to amass additional assets, aiming to bolster the team’s overall strength. The Bears, plagued by underperforming defensive and offensive lines for a significant portion of the 2023 season, exhibited improvement towards the end, concluding with a 7-10 record.
