Despite these challenges, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer expressed confidence and downplayed concerns about the running game. He acknowledged the need for improvement but emphasized the team’s potential for success with a cohesive offensive line, Pollard’s abilities, and effective blocking by the receivers.
The Cowboys currently rank 14th for rushing yards per game (111.8), and achieving consistent success with the run game has been an ongoing struggle. However, Schottenheimer sees an opportunity for improvement in Week 18 as they face the Washington Commanders, a team that has struggled against the run, allowing over 100 rushing yards in nearly every game. Schottenheimer highlighted the importance of working on the running game, considering it a key factor in the team’s overall success. As they prepare to face a physical commander’s defense, the emphasis on running the football is heightened.
Tony Pollard, with 935 yards on the season, has the chance to surpass his Pro Bowl total from the previous year (1,007) if he can gain 73 more yards. The upcoming game against the Commanders, known for their vulnerability against the run, presents an opportune moment for Pollard to achieve this milestone.
With the Cowboys aiming for a win to secure the NFC East title and the No. 2 seed, a strong ground game against the Commanders’ defense could prove pivotal. Despite the ongoing challenges, Schottenheimer remains optimistic, hoping for a successful performance in the nation’s capital.
