Having embarked on a season-long loan to Southampton as they aim for promotion from the English Championship, the 27-year-old’s limited game-time has caught the attention of Rangers, who are “waiting in the wings,” according to The Sun. Sean Dyche, the Everton manager, is keen on Holgate playing more regularly and might consider terminating his loan deal, paving the way for the defender to find a new club in the January transfer window. Middlesbrough and Watford are also reportedly interested, but Rangers are among the clubs eager to secure his services.
Despite being under contract with Everton until 2025, Holgate’s availability has sparked interest from potential suitors. Southampton, currently sitting fourth in the Championship, is striving for an immediate return to the Premier League, trailing Ipswich by ten points and league leaders Leicester City by 11 after 20 games.
Everton, in the Premier League, occupies 17th place, four points above the relegation zone, despite a points deduction. The team has recently achieved three consecutive victories without conceding against Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, and Chelsea.
Holgate’s versatility, being able to play in defense or midfield, would offer options to Philippe Clement, the Rangers boss, who is approaching his first transfer window in charge. Former Rangers manager Michael Beale made significant signings in the summer, but with some scrutiny over their performance and a subsequent poor start to the campaign, he was relieved of his duties. Clement’s unbeaten run since taking over faces a critical week, with important fixtures against Real Betis in Seville and the Viaplay Cup Final against Aberdeen, where he aims to secure his first trophy as the team’s manager.
