“Unnecessary”: Steven Schumacher shares a bittered verdict on Jordan Thompson’s red card as Stoke City draw with Ipswich Town…

Steven Schumacher, the head coach of Stoke City, has expressed his belief that Jordan Thompson’s red card in the 0-0 draw against Ipswich Town was unnecessary. Thompson, who had already received a yellow card, was accused of waving an imaginary card after being fouled by Conor Chaplin just outside his own box. Referee Thomas Bramall, a substitute official, initially awarded a free kick but then surprised everyone by issuing a yellow card followed by a red to Thompson.

Schumacher voiced his disagreement with the decision, deeming it not clear and obvious. According to the referee, Thompson gestured with an imaginary card, a claim that Schumacher contested, stating that he didn’t witness such an action. The head coach sought clarification from the fourth official, who also had not seen the alleged gesture. Schumacher considered the red card unnecessary and felt it had a negative impact on the flow of the game.

Thompson had received his first yellow card from the original referee, James Bell, before Bell suffered a hamstring injury, leading to the fourth official, Bramall, taking charge.

Despite the setback, Stoke City managed to secure a 0-0 draw, maintaining their unbeaten streak under Schumacher, which now extends to six games—comprising one win and five draws. This positive run follows a four-game losing streak that marked the conclusion of the Alex Neil era. Stoke City currently occupies the 19th position in the Championship.

Schumacher credited the players for their resilience, emphasizing their ability to stay focused and work hard to secure a point against Ipswich Town. He acknowledged that the red card affected their attacking flow but commended the team for sticking together and ensuring that Ipswich was kept at bay. Looking ahead, Stoke City faces an FA Cup home clash with Brighton and Hove Albion before an away fixture against Rotherham United on January 13.
