Watford 1-2 Ipswich Town: Late Sam Morsy strike sees Tractor Boys increase gap in promotion race…
Ipswich Town staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming an early deficit to secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road, thus claiming the Championship summit from Leicester. Yaser Asprilla’s early goal for Watford initially dampened Ipswich’s hopes of surpassing the Foxes, but George Hirst’s equalizer set the stage for a captivating clash ultimately decided by Sam Morsy’s late strike in the 80th minute.
The match commenced with Mileta Rajovic heading the first chance over Ipswich’s crossbar in the fourth minute. Ipswich responded with a Marcus Harness header in the 11th minute, but it was Watford who capitalized on an Ipswich error a minute later. Axel Tuanzebe’s pass back to goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky went awry, intercepted by Asprilla, who capitalized on the opportunity, securing an early lead for Watford.
Undeterred, Ipswich aimed to regain control, with Conor Chaplin volleying a shot that Watford goalkeeper Ben Hamer safely handled in the 18th minute. The visitors found their equalizer through George Hirst in the 24th minute after Omari Hutchinson’s low drive took a deflection off Jamal Lewis, allowing Hirst to capitalize from close range.

The attacking tempo persisted in the second half, with both teams vying for the lead. Ipswich’s Hirst narrowly missed thumping Hamer’s near post in the 60th minute, while Watford’s Lewis saw a deflected shot narrowly miss the Ipswich box. The balance teetered on the brink, with both defenses holding firm.
In the 80th minute, the pivotal moment arrived as Ipswich capitalized on a defensive error by Wesley Hoedt. Losing possession while attempting to build from the back, Hoedt fell victim to Morsy, who seized the opportunity and confidently slotted the ball past Hamer, securing Ipswich’s lead and ultimately the victory.
The result not only propelled Ipswich to the top of the Championship but showcased their resilience and determination in the promotion race. The late-game heroics by Morsy underscored the significance of capitalizing on opponents’ mistakes and solidified Ipswich’s standing as a formidable contender in the race for promotion.
