Hull City’s head coach, Liam Rosenior, has issued a cautionary message to Championship clubs in light of the recently sealed £6.7 billion Premier League television rights deal set to commence from the 2025–26 season. The substantial increase in the value of this agreement, approximately £2 billion more than its predecessor, is anticipated to intensify the ambitions of Championship clubs eager to secure promotion and reap the financial rewards associated with top-flight football.
For Rosenior and Hull City, the aspiration to reclaim a position in English football’s elite remains fervent, with the upcoming busy Christmas period presenting an opportunity to end their seven-year hiatus from the Premier League.
However, Rosenior is adamant that this pursuit should not come at the expense of the club’s long-term stability, emphasizing the perils of risking a club’s future for the allure of immediate success.
Rosenior draws on personal experience from his time at Derby County, where the club narrowly missed out on promotion in the 2019 play-off final against Aston Villa. The aftermath saw Derby County grappling with financial challenges, including failed takeovers, ownership disputes, and the specter of administration. Rosenior, alongside Wayne Rooney, navigated the tumultuous aftermath, highlighting the potential consequences of recklessly pursuing Premier League aspirations.
Reflecting on the volatile period at Derby, Rosenior underscores the importance of avoiding undue risks. He cites two contrasting examples, Brentford and Brighton, with the latter being a club where he gained firsthand experience.
Rosenior is determined to instill a methodical approach at Hull City, aligning with the vision of club owners Acun Ilicali and Tan Kesler. He stresses the need for clubs to adopt a measured and sustainable strategy rather than succumbing to the temptation of reckless spending that jeopardizes their financial stability.
Rosenior acknowledges the financial support from Hull City’s ownership since Acun Ilicali’s takeover and anticipates continued backing in the upcoming January transfer window. However, he underscores that such investments will be made judiciously, with a commitment to safeguarding the club’s long-term prospects. The head coach emphasizes the importance of building success on solid foundations, working through a strategic process that prioritizes stability over short-term gains.
In collaboration with Acun and Tan, Rosenior envisions a prolonged tenure at Hull City, dedicated to steering the club through a carefully constructed process. His goal is to achieve sustainable success, ensuring that the club reaches its full potential without compromising its financial health. As Rosenior looks forward to the future, he envisions a club on a trajectory toward success, built on the principles of financial prudence and methodical progression.
