Minnesota Twins star Royce Lewis was placed on the injured list Wednesday due to a right adductor strain. This occurred less than 24 hours after he exited Tuesday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers with tightness in his left groin. The injury took place during the sixth inning after Lewis hit a two-run double, visibly running at half-speed due to the immediate impact on his movement.
Following the game, Lewis confirmed he would undergo imaging to determine the injury’s severity. Team executive Derek Falvey informed reporters Thursday that Lewis will be sidelined at least through the All-Star break.
Lewis, 25, is arguably one of the unluckiest players in the sport. Despite his superstar potential, injuries have limited him to fewer than 100 big-league games since being drafted first overall in 2017. This season, in just 24 games, he’s posted an impressive .292/.354/.685 slash line with 10 home runs and five additional extra-base hits.
Earlier this season, Lewis missed two months with a partially torn quadriceps suffered on Opening Day. His injury history also includes two torn ACLs in the same leg.
To fill his roster spot, Minnesota has called up top prospect Brooks Lee for his MLB debut.
The Twins entered Wednesday with a 48-37 record, placing them second in the American League Central. They trail the surprising Cleveland Guardians by six games but currently hold the second American League wild-card spot, maintaining a two-game lead over the Kansas City Royals and a 2 1/2 game advantage over the Boston Red Sox.
