Three Outstanding Players the Texans Should Consider in Free Agency

The Houston Texans are facing a significant turnover in their roster as they head into the upcoming offseason, with a plethora of players hitting free agency. Fortunately, the team finds itself in a favorable financial position, boasting the fifth-largest cap space in the league, totaling over $65 million, as reported by spotrac. While there’s a pressing need to re-sign some of their own talents, there’s also an opportunity to bolster their lineup with targeted free agent acquisitions. Despite finishing the previous season with a 10-7 record, the Texans recognize the importance of reinforcing their core, spearheaded by standout performers like C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr. Here are three notable free agents who could contribute significantly to their roster:

Saquon Barkley – Running Back: In the 2023 NFL season, the Texans struggled significantly in the running game, ranking among the bottom teams in key rushing statistics. Dameon Pierce, their primary running back, experienced a decline in performance, prompting the team to explore alternatives like Devin Singletary. While Singletary provided a boost, he lacked the explosive playmaking abilities showcased by Saquon Barkley. Despite enduring a challenging season with the New York Giants, Barkley managed to amass impressive yardage and touchdown figures. While there’s inherent risk associated with investing in a running back, given their shortened careers, Barkley’s potential impact could alleviate pressure on Stroud and inject vitality into the Texans’ offense.

Danielle Hunter – Edge Rusher: The Texans’ defensive line could receive a substantial boost with the addition of Danielle Hunter, contingent on the decisions made regarding pending free agent Jonathan Greenard. Greenard’s impressive sack tally last season makes him a coveted asset, yet the allure of acquiring Hunter cannot be overstated. With an impressive track record of sacks and forced fumbles, Hunter presents a formidable threat to opposing offenses. Pairing Hunter with Anderson Jr. would create a formidable tandem along the defensive front, capable of disrupting opposing game plans and bolstering the Texans’ defense significantly.

Mike Owenu – Tackle/Guard: Mike Owenu, formerly of the New England Patriots, emerges as a top target in the free agency market, particularly given his versatility along the offensive line. Owenu’s ability to seamlessly transition between guard and tackle positions renders him a valuable asset for any team. Moreover, the familiarity between Owenu and Texans’ general manager Nick Caserio, stemming from their time together in New England, could facilitate a potential reunion. With potential vacancies at left guard and right tackle, Owenu’s skill set aligns perfectly with the Texans’ needs, making him a compelling candidate for acquisition.

As the Texans navigate the complexities of the offseason, strategic acquisitions in free agency could play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s trajectory for the upcoming season. By targeting impact players like Barkley, Hunter, and Owenu, the Texans have an opportunity to fortify their roster and position themselves for success in the competitive landscape of the NFL.
