Saints Boss Martin Russell sent a seven-word message as he slams at poor mentality after devastating 1-1 draw at Huddersfield Town…

Southampton’s Martin makes ‘mentality’ admission in Huddersfield draw…

SAINTS manager Russell Martin admitted “our mentality has cost us two points” after a 1-1 draw at struggling Huddersfield Town.

Despite an injury crisis, Darren Moore’s Huddersfield Town managed to secure a draw with an 87th-minute equalizer from Ben Jackson on Saturday. Adam Armstrong, Southampton’s leading scorer, netted his 10th goal of the Championship campaign, opening the scoring at the end of a dominant first half.

Reflecting on the match, Martin, Huddersfield’s manager, expressed disappointment in the stark difference between the two halves. While praising the team’s brilliance in the first half, he noted a significant drop in energy and intensity after gaining a 1-0 lead.

Martin highlighted the team’s failure to execute their planned strategy, attributing it to a lack of energy and intensity.

Addressing potential factors, Martin mentioned the impact of several players being on international duty, suggesting it might be a contributing factor to the team’s fatigue. Despite acknowledging these challenges, he emphasized that there are no excuses and the team should have secured a win.

Frustrated by the missed opportunity, Martin believed the goal conceded was inevitable, attributing it to the team’s shift in atmosphere and a decrease in bravery.

He mentioned making tactical tweaks at halftime to find more attacking opportunities, but the team failed to execute the plan, forcing plays unnecessarily.

Comparing the situation to a previous game against Rotherham, Martin pointed out a potential complacency among the players, thinking the game was easy.

He expressed anger about the dropped points and stressed the need for improved performance in the upcoming match against Bristol City on Wednesday.

Martin urged the players to recognize the mental lapse that cost them two points and emphasized the importance of being better in the upcoming fixture.

Southampton, their next opponent, has recently undergone managerial changes, with Liam Manning taking charge after Nigel Pearson’s departure. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, November 29, at St Mary’s.
