What began as a promising new era under center in Denver is suddenly showing signs of early tension. According to multiple team sources, the Broncos are growing increasingly concerned about the on-field chemistry—or lack thereof—between rookie quarterback Bo Nix and fellow 2025 first-round pick, wide receiver Javon Baker, the $13 million man expected to help spark the offense.
Despite strong individual flashes from both Nix and Baker during OTAs, insiders say the duo has struggled to connect consistently in practice. Miscommunications on route timing, a string of dropped passes, and visible frustration during drills have reportedly raised red flags among the coaching staff.
“Bo’s timing is precise. He expects guys to be where they’re supposed to be,” one team source said. “Right now, he and Javon just aren’t seeing the field the same way.”
Baker, selected 22nd overall and signed to a fully guaranteed deal worth $13 million, was brought in for his big-play ability and explosiveness after the catch. Meanwhile, Nix, taken 12th overall, is being positioned as the Broncos’ future franchise quarterback. With both rookies expected to play key roles in revitalizing Sean Payton’s offense, the lack of early cohesion is a growing concern.
“It’s not panic mode, but it’s definitely something we’re watching closely,” said one member of the offensive coaching staff.
Bo Nix addressed the media Thursday and downplayed the disconnect. “It’s early. We’re building every day,” he said. “Javon’s a great talent. We’re gonna get on the same page.”
Still, with high expectations in Denver and an impatient fan base eager for signs of progress, the spotlight will only intensify as training camp approaches. Payton is known for being detail-oriented and has already hinted that roster decisions will be “performance-driven, not pedigree-driven.”
If the chemistry doesn’t click soon, don’t be surprised if other receivers like Courtland Sutton or Marvin Mims Jr. get a bigger share of reps with the starting unit as the Broncos search for the right formula.
For now, Nix and Baker remain the future—but the franchise will be watching closely to see if they can start looking like it.
