In a long-awaited celebration of one of baseball’s most iconic figures, Netflix has officially announced the release of “The Underdog,” a powerful new documentary chronicling the life, legacy, and unmatched endurance of Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. The film is slated to premiere globally on September 12, 2025, marking the 30th anniversary of Ripken’s historic breaking of Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games played record.
The documentary, directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Laura Michaels, offers a rare, intimate look at the man known as “The Iron Man,” who played in an unprecedented 2,632 consecutive games over a 21-year career — all with the Orioles.
Netflix released a gripping teaser trailer Tuesday morning, showing archival footage of Ripken’s childhood in Maryland, his early struggles to earn respect in the big leagues, and the emotional night in 1995 when the baseball world stood and applauded as he passed Gehrig’s record — a moment many consider the most defining of the modern era.
“Cal Ripken Jr. isn’t just a baseball player,” the trailer declares. “He’s what baseball means.”
“The Underdog” features exclusive interviews with Ripken himself, his former teammates, Hall of Famers, family members, and even rivals who came to admire his relentless discipline, quiet leadership, and unmatched durability. The film also dives deep into Ripken’s off-the-field impact — from inspiring youth athletes to leading post-retirement community and charitable work.
Ripken, 64, spoke briefly in a press release:
“I’ve always let my play do the talking. But this story isn’t just about me — it’s about perseverance, belief, and doing things the right way, every single day.”
Netflix executives called the film one of their most inspiring sports documentaries to date, comparing it to The Last Dance and Quarterback for its emotional depth and cultural significance.
Orioles fans — and baseball fans everywhere — can circle September 12, 2025 on their calendars. That’s when The Underdog premieres, shining a long-overdue spotlight on the man who became a symbol of grit, loyalty, and excellence in America’s pastime.
