In a blockbuster development ahead of the trade deadline, the Houston Astros are reportedly finalizing a deal to acquire David Bednar, the well-experienced and highly reliable reliever from the Pittsburgh Pirates, along with two additional players in a move designed to supercharge their bullpen for the stretch run.
According to multiple league sources, the deal is in advanced stages and could be officially announced within the next 24 to 48 hours. The Astros, currently pushing for dominance in the AL West, have been aggressive in their pursuit of veteran arms to stabilize late-game situations — and Bednar fits that need perfectly.
Bednar, a two-time All-Star with postseason-caliber stuff, has been one of the few bright spots in Pittsburgh’s bullpen over the past seasons. Known for his power fastball, sharp curve, and icy composure under pressure, he brings not only elite closing ability but also valuable playoff-level experience.
Alongside Bednar, two additional pieces — believed to include a utility infielder and a promising young arm — will be heading to Houston, giving the Astros depth and flexibility on both ends of the diamond.
In exchange, the Pirates are expected to receive a package of high-upside prospects, including at least one top-10 player from the Astros’ farm system, signaling a clear long-term play for Pittsburgh.
Astros GM Dana Brown has made it clear in recent weeks that bolstering the bullpen was a top priority. “We’re built to compete now, and that means having the kind of arms that can close out games in October,” he said last week — a comment that now looks prophetic.
