The Houston Astros have been dealt a significant blow as their $31 million All-Pro slugger has reportedly suffered a troubling injury that could have major implications for the remainder of the season.
According to team sources and multiple reports, Yordan Álvarez, the Astros’ powerhouse designated hitter and outfielder, is dealing with a lingering oblique issue that has worsened over the past week. The team has not officially placed him on the injured list yet, but growing concern is mounting within the clubhouse and front office.
Álvarez, who signed a six-year, $115 million extension in 2022 and is in the prime of his career, has been one of the few consistent offensive weapons for Houston this season. His power at the plate and ability to drive in runs have made him irreplaceable in a lineup that has struggled at times due to injuries and underperformance.
What started as a “precautionary” rest day has evolved into something far more alarming. Álvarez has missed several games over the last 10 days, and sources say the injury is being evaluated “day to day” — a status that often signals uncertainty rather than optimism.
“He’s just not responding the way we’d hoped,” said one team insider. “Anytime it’s an oblique — especially for a hitter like Yordan — it’s tricky. You don’t want to rush it and risk a bigger setback.”
With Álvarez sidelined, the Astros face a gaping hole in the heart of their batting order. The slugger has already belted double-digit home runs this season and is among the team leaders in RBIs and OPS. His absence would leave veterans like Jose Altuve and Kyle Tucker under increased pressure to carry the offensive load — something that could be unsustainable over a long stretch.
Houston, already battling to stay competitive in a stacked AL West, can ill afford to lose Álvarez for an extended period. With the team hovering around .500 and fighting for a Wild Card position, the timing couldn’t be worse.
Astros manager Joe Espada has not ruled out further testing or even a short IL stint if Álvarez doesn’t show improvement soon. “We’re trying to be cautious,” Espada said. “He means too much to this club to take any chances.”
