The rebuild in Chicago just took a major step forward.
The Chicago Blackhawks have officially reached agreements to sign two highly regarded European prospects, Lucas Forsell and Hugo Gabrielson, the team announced Monday morning. Both players are considered rising stars in their respective leagues, and their arrivals signal the Blackhawks’ ongoing commitment to building a young, competitive core around generational talent Connor Bedard.
The 21-year-old Swedish winger has been lighting up the SHL (Swedish Hockey League) with Färjestad BK, where he recorded 18 goals and 25 assists in 51 games last season. Known for his blistering speed, strong puck control, and creative offensive play, Forsell is considered one of Sweden’s most promising young forwards.
“Lucas has elite instincts and the type of offensive upside that’s hard to teach,” said Blackhawks Director of Player Development. “We’re excited to see how quickly he adapts to the North American game.”
Forsell is expected to compete for a roster spot as early as next season, likely starting with the Rockford IceHogs (AHL) before making his NHL debut.
A steady, mobile defenseman with a two-way game, Hugo Gabrielson, 22, has quietly built an impressive resume in the HockeyAllsvenskan with Västerås IK, where he logged 27 points (6 goals, 21 assists) in 48 games while averaging over 22 minutes of ice time per night. His calm demeanor under pressure and high hockey IQ make him a valuable addition to Chicago’s blue line prospects.
“Hugo brings size, poise, and a smooth first pass — qualities we’re looking for as we shape the next generation of Blackhawks defense,” the team stated.
The signings of Forsell and Gabrielson are part of GM Kyle Davidson’s long-term vision of building through youth, development, and international scouting. Both players were heavily scouted throughout the season, and their signing now gives Chicago even more depth to grow alongside Bedard, Frank Nazar, Kevin Korchinski, and Oliver Moore.
While it’s unlikely either player will immediately crack the NHL roster in October, both will be given a strong look at training camp. Their development paths will be closely monitored, and they could be key contributors within the next 1–2 years.
For a franchise once defined by veterans and Stanley Cup runs, the Blackhawks’ new identity is youthful, fast, and full of upside — and with the additions of Lucas Forsell and Hugo Gabrielson, the future just got even brighter.
