In a bold and unexpected move, the Denver Broncos have officially confirmed the signing of two highly-rated 21-year-old players from division rivals, both of whom were recently released and out of contract—adding youth, talent, and a hint of rivalry-fueled drama to their offseason plans.
According to the team’s official announcement this morning, the Broncos have signed wide receiver Jalen Carter (formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs) and cornerback Malik Thompson (previously with the Las Vegas Raiders) to multi-year rookie-level deals after both young talents surprisingly went unclaimed in recent weeks.
Though both players were undrafted in 2024 and were recently waived after spending time on practice squads, NFL insiders have long considered them “underrated gems” with raw athletic potential. Broncos GM George Paton acted quickly to bring them into the fold, citing their untapped upside and the opportunity to develop them within Denver’s growing youth movement.
“These are two young men with exceptional athletic tools, strong work ethics, and chips on their shoulders,” Paton said. “They’re hungry, and we’re excited to give them a real shot in Denver.”
What makes this signing particularly sweet for Broncos fans is that both players come directly from AFC West rivals, adding extra intrigue ahead of the 2025 season.

Jalen Carter (not to be confused with the Eagles’ defensive tackle) was a standout at Baylor before signing with the Chiefs. Known for his deep speed and sharp cuts, he caught attention in preseason last year before being edged out of KC’s crowded receiver room.

Malik Thompson, a rangy 6’1″ corner with a ball-hawk mentality, had impressed the Raiders in camp but was waived after the team’s secondary overhaul this offseason. He recorded 3 INTs in his final college season at Arizona State and has shown promise in man coverage.
Both players are expected to compete immediately for spots on special teams and in rotational packages, with the coaching staff already hinting they’ll be featured prominently during OTAs and training camp.
The news has ignited buzz among Broncos fans on social media, many of whom see the signings as another sign that head coach Sean Payton and his staff are committed to rebuilding from the ground up—with smart, calculated risks.
The Broncos are coming off a season full of highs and lows, but this latest move adds even more energy to a young, athletic roster hungry to turn the page.
Two rivals. One destination. And perhaps—two breakout stories in the making.
