In a move that signals the Vancouver Canucks are serious about making a deeper playoff push next season, the organization has officially reached a mutual agreement with the Florida Panthers to acquire veteran forward Sam Bennett.
The 28-year-old center, known for his gritty two-way play, postseason toughness, and versatility, arrives in Vancouver via a trade finalized early Saturday, marking one of the Canucks’ most impactful early offseason moves. The deal, confirmed by both clubs, is said to involve a package that includes a mid-round draft pick and a depth prospect.
“We’re thrilled to bring in a player of Sam’s caliber,” said Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin. “He brings a competitive edge, playoff experience, and a physical presence that will help us continue to evolve our identity as a tough team to play against.”
Bennett, originally drafted 4th overall in 2014 by the Calgary Flames, has revived his career in Florida in recent seasons. In 2024–25, he posted 17 goals and 23 assists over 71 games and once again shone in the playoffs with timely goals and relentless forechecking.
His addition gives Vancouver added depth down the middle and allows the coaching staff flexibility in managing matchups, particularly in defensive-zone draws and penalty-killing situations. He’s expected to slot into the third-line center role, anchoring a line built for physicality and transition play.
“I’m pumped to be heading back to a Canadian market,” Bennett said in a statement. “Vancouver has an incredible fanbase and a team that’s building something special. I can’t wait to get started.”
The Canucks, fresh off a strong postseason run that reignited hockey excitement across British Columbia, are clearly focused on building around a young core that includes Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes, and Thatcher Demko. Bennett’s arrival adds veteran playoff grit to that foundation.
Insiders suggest this could be just the first of multiple moves by Vancouver this summer, as the front office looks to turn potential into results—and Bennett is already being seen as a perfect puzzle piece.
