In one of the most highly anticipated sports documentaries of the year, Netflix has officially announced the release of “The Underdog”—a” compelling, no-holds-barred chronicle of the life and legacy of Auburn Tigers icon and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley. The documentary is scheduled to premiere worldwide on July 15, 2025.
The feature-length film will take fans on a deep dive into Barkley’s journey — from his humble beginnings in Leeds, Alabama, to his electrifying college career at Auburn University, and ultimately to becoming one of the most dominant and outspoken figures in NBA history.
“Charles Barkley is one of the most fascinating and misunderstood athletes of our time,” said executive producer Ava DuVernay. “This film explores the grit, the fire, the setbacks, and the triumphs of a man who never fit the mold—and never wanted to.”
“The Underdog” places special focus on Barkley’s time with the Auburn Tigers, where he became an SEC sensation from 1981 to 1984. Often criticized for his weight and unorthodox play style, Barkley silenced doubters by becoming the SEC Player of the Year in 1984 and leading Auburn to national relevance.
Through rare footage, personal interviews, and testimonials from former teammates, coaches, and rivals, the film highlights how Barkley’s underdog mentality shaped his relentless drive and on-court dominance.
“I wasn’t supposed to make it. Too short. Too heavy. Too raw,” Barkley says in the trailer. “But when you bet against me, that’s when I come alive.”
Netflix promises an unfiltered portrayal of Barkley’s transition from college phenom to NBA superstar, and later, to cultural icon and Emmy-winning broadcaster. The documentary will also examine the personal struggles he’s faced—family hardship, media scrutiny, and racial injustice—and how those experiences shaped the man fans see today.
The documentary includes appearances from basketball legends like Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson, as well as from figures outside of basketball, such as President Barack Obama and civil rights leaders who speak on Barkley’s cultural influence.
Netflix confirmed that “The Underdog” will be released globally on July 15, 2025, and will be available in over 30 languages. The trailer, which dropped early this morning, is already trending across social media platforms.
“This isn’t just about basketball,” said Barkley. “It’s about fighting through doubt, staying true to yourself, and proving that being different is a strength—not a weakness.”
