Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of a highly anticipated sports documentary, “The Underdog,” centered on San Diego Padres legend Garry Templeton. The emotional and in-depth series will explore Templeton’s remarkable journey, his complex legacy, and the impact he left both on and off the baseball field.

The documentary is slated to premiere on August 15, 2025, and is expected to captivate both baseball fans and broader audiences with never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews, and a candid look at one of the most unique careers in MLB history.

“This isn’t just a baseball story,” said Netflix Sports Documentaries executive producer Linda Cortez. “It’s a story about perseverance, pressure, and personal growth. Garry Templeton embodied all of that — and more.”

Templeton, once at the center of one of baseball’s most talked-about trades — when he was swapped for Ozzie Smith in 1981 — went on to become a cornerstone for the Padres, spending over a decade in San Diego and helping lead the team to its first-ever World Series appearance in 1984.

Often misunderstood and underappreciated during his early years, Templeton evolved into a respected clubhouse leader, and his journey from divisive figure to beloved mentor and coach is at the heart of The Underdog.

The documentary will feature:

  • Extensive interviews with Templeton, former teammates, family, and coaches.

  • Behind-the-scenes stories from the Padres’ 1984 season and Templeton’s All-Star years.

  • Exploration of racial dynamics in baseball during the 1970s and ’80s.

  • Reflections on Templeton’s post-playing days as a minor league manager and community figure.

Padres fans flooded social media with excitement following the announcement:

“Garry Templeton deserves this spotlight. He was the soul of our team in the ’80s,” tweeted one long-time fan.

“About time we honored his legacy properly. Can’t wait to watch,” added another.

Templeton’s legacy has often been overshadowed by louder headlines and bigger-market stars. The Underdog seeks to reframe his contributions, shedding light on a player whose heart and grit defined an era for Padres baseball.

The six-part series will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix beginning August 15.
