In a blockbuster move aimed at solidifying their roster for a deep postseason run, Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson announced today the signing of veteran outfielder and elite defender Wilyer Abreu to a four-year contract worth a staggering $300 million.
The deal marks one of the most aggressive free-agent signings in franchise history, signaling the Mariners’ all-in approach to contending in the American League.
“Wilyer is one of the most dynamic fielders and rising stars in the game today,” Wilson said during a press conference at T-Mobile Park. “He brings a rare combination of defensive brilliance, plate discipline, and clubhouse leadership that will be a game-changer for this team.”
Abreu, 25, emerged as a standout with the Boston Red Sox over the past two seasons, earning widespread recognition for his outfield range, throwing arm, and developing offensive upside. He posted a .272 batting average with 13 home runs and 52 RBIs in 2024, while also finishing among the league leaders in outfield assists and defensive runs saved.
Seattle’s front office reportedly beat out several big-market teams in pursuit of Abreu’s services, reflecting both the player’s rising star power and the Mariners’ urgency to compete for a championship. The $300 million contract is among the richest ever awarded to a non-pitcher, and underscores Seattle’s commitment to bolstering a roster already headlined by stars like Julio Rodríguez and George Kirby.
