In a bold and heartwarming act of philanthropy, WNBA superstar and Iowa native Caitlin Clark has announced a $7.5 million personal investment to transform a sprawling estate in West Des Moines into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The 23-year-old Indiana Fever guard, widely considered one of the most influential figures in women’s sports today, revealed the news early Saturday morning, saying the project is “deeply personal” and “a dream I’ve had for years.”
“This is about giving kids a real chance,” Clark said in a statement. “Too many young people in our communities fall through the cracks. I want them to know they matter, that someone sees them and believes in their future.”
The shelter—named “The Beacon” by Clark—will offer not only a safe place to stay but also education assistance, mental health services, career training, and recreational facilities. The property, a 10-bedroom estate Clark purchased earlier this year, will be renovated in partnership with local nonprofit organizations and youth advocates. Construction is expected to be completed by early 2026.
City leaders and community members have already praised the move. West Des Moines Mayor Russ Trimble called Clark’s gesture “a transformative gift of hope and leadership,” noting that the city has seen a rise in youth homelessness in recent years.
Clark, who has captivated basketball fans since her record-breaking college days at the University of Iowa, has consistently emphasized the importance of giving back to her community. Despite her rising fame on and off the court, she has remained rooted in her Iowa upbringing.
“She could have done anything with that money,” said Jessica Morgan, director of Youth Forward Iowa. “The fact that she chose to invest in our most vulnerable speaks volumes about who she is.”
This is Clark’s largest philanthropic endeavor to date, but according to her representatives, it likely won’t be her last. Plans are reportedly underway to establish a foundation focused on youth empowerment and housing initiatives.
As Clark continues to dazzle fans in the WNBA, it’s clear her legacy is being built far beyond basketball—and in the lives of those who need a second chance the most.
