In a move that has left fans both intrigued and amused, Netflix has officially announced the release of a brand-new sports documentary titled “The Underdog,” centered around the Vancouver Canucks — but with an unexpected twist: the film reportedly includes a deep dive into baseball history.
The documentary, set to premiere on July 25, 2025, aims to chronicle the rise, heartbreaks, and culture of one of the NHL’s most resilient franchises, the Vancouver Canucks. However, early press screenings and teaser clips show that the series also includes segments on baseball, drawing curious reactions from fans of both sports.
“It’s not a mistake,” said Netflix Sports Originals producer Jamie Larkin. “The Canucks’ story is about more than hockey — it’s about resilience, identity, and the underdog spirit, which crosses over into the world of baseball in fascinating ways.”
The documentary will feature archival footage, exclusive interviews with former Canucks legends like Trevor Linden and Henrik Sedin, and previously unseen behind-the-scenes moments from the team’s dramatic Stanley Cup Final runs in 1994 and 2011.
At the same time, the film detours into North American baseball roots, drawing historical parallels between struggling expansion teams, fan loyalty, and the broader evolution of sports franchises that have battled decades of near misses and heartbreak.
“Think of it as a metaphor,” said director Morgan Ellis. “The Canucks represent the underdog in Canadian hockey — much like the early Seattle Mariners or even the pre-2004 Red Sox in baseball.”
Fan Reaction: Confused but Curious
Canucks fans took to social media after the trailer dropped, some expressing confusion over the baseball inclusion.
“Wait — why are we talking about the Yankees when this is supposed to be about Vancouver?” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Others praised the creative direction, calling it a “unique lens on sports pain and perseverance.”
