In a tough blow to the Chicago Blackhawks’ goaltending corps, rising netminder Arvid Söderblom has suffered an unexpected injury setback that will delay his return to the ice and raise fresh concerns about the team’s depth in net moving forward.
Söderblom, who had been working his way back from a lower-body injury sustained earlier this season, reportedly experienced renewed discomfort during a recent on-ice session. Following further evaluation, team doctors determined that the injury had not healed as anticipated, forcing the Blackhawks to pause his rehab and extend his recovery timeline.
“This is definitely frustrating,” said head coach Luke Richardson. “Arvid’s been putting in the work, and he was close to returning, but this kind of setback means we have to be extra cautious. His long-term health is what matters most.”
Söderblom, 25, was expected to take a significant step forward this season as part of a goaltending tandem with veteran Petr Mrázek. While his win-loss record hasn’t reflected it, Söderblom has often shown flashes of promise in the crease with his athleticism and poise under pressure. With him sidelined again, the Blackhawks may need to lean more heavily on organizational depth or explore emergency call-ups to stabilize the position.
The timing couldn’t be worse for a rebuilding team that has already been riddled with injuries across the lineup and is focused on developing its young core around superstar rookie Connor Bedard.
“It’s a setback, no doubt,” said teammate Seth Jones. “Arvid’s a competitor, and we know he’ll fight through it. But it hurts not having him out there with us.”
There is currently no clear timetable for Söderblom’s return, but the team is expected to provide an official update in the coming days.
The Blackhawks will be forced to adjust yet again—hoping to find answers between the pipes while one of their most promising young goalies continues his battle to get back.
