The New York Rangers have made a bold statement about their future, officially signing fan-favorite forward Matt Rempe to a five-year contract extension, solidifying his role as a key piece in the team’s long-term core.
The deal, announced by Rangers President and GM Chris Drury, is reportedly worth $11.25 million over five years (an average annual value of $2.25 million), reflecting both the club’s belief in Rempe’s growing value and his importance to the team’s identity moving forward.
“Matt brings a unique blend of size, physicality, and energy that has become vital to our locker room,” said Drury. “He’s earned this with his work ethic and his impact on and off the ice. We’re thrilled to keep him in New York.”
Rempe, 21, burst onto the scene during the 2023–24 season with a mix of old-school toughness and surprising mobility for his 6-foot-7 frame. He quickly won over Rangers fans with big hits, fearless fights, and a willingness to do the dirty work that doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet. Despite limited minutes, Rempe provided a consistent spark and a physical presence that helped open up space for the team’s top skill players.
His development throughout the season didn’t go unnoticed. Under head coach Peter Laviolette, Rempe earned increased trust in situational minutes, particularly in protecting leads and setting the tone early in games.
“Matt’s energy is contagious,” said Laviolette. “He knows his role, and he plays it with pride. We’re excited to continue building with him as part of our foundation.”
Rempe, originally a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, has become a cult hero among Blueshirts fans. His relentless playing style, humility, and willingness to stand up for his teammates have drawn comparisons to beloved Rangers enforcers of the past.
“I love playing here,” Rempe said in a team release. “Putting on the Rangers jersey is an honor, and I want to keep earning it every day. I’m just getting started.”
With the deal now done, Rempe is set to remain a fixture at Madison Square Garden through the 2028–29 season—cementing his spot in the Rangers’ core as they continue to chase championship glory.
